Online Painting Children Beyond the Photo Recording
January 22, 24, and 29
Time TBD
(This is VIEW ONLY with no critiques and active participation outside of asking questions in the chat window in the zoom meeting. Student doesn't have to be there for the live workshop because the video will be recorded and sent out after each class to watch.)
In this 3 day workshop, students will create a finished portrait painting from a photo reference emailed to each student for the workshop. Being able to create authentic paintings and capture the essence of who a person is, especially children, will be a major focal point of the workshop. We will successfully create emotive paintings to capture the nuances and fresh color in children's skin tones as well as capturing their personality.
Emphasis will be placed on value control, skin tone, and edges. By focusing on deliberate color weaving and maintaining accurate mass relationships rather than rendering, the application of paint marks creates form and energy. Students will use the method of relative sizing to transcribe their photograph to their paper.
Class discussions will include the advantages and pitfalls of using photo references for drawing and how to accurately judge values, edges and forms within your photo.
This workshop aims to guide students toward creating a painting from a photo reference, using traditional painting techniques. Shana will instruct students on how to use photographs to create a painting that surpasses the look of the photograph, not simply imitates it.
